What is an Ego Authority in Human Design?
How to make decisions following your heart’s desire
Human Design is a mystical system of self-discovery with practical applications. One such application is following what’s called your “inner authority” to make correct decisions for your life. When you do, things just work out better.
What’s wild is that in Human Design no one is designed to make decisions from their minds. Instead, there are seven different types of authorities. Only Projectors and Manifestors can have an ego authority.
If you have an ego authority, you need to make sure your heart is in it when making decisions. This is because you have a defined heart center, which is also known as the ego center.

Your choices in life should be made by following your desires and what you want to do.
If your heart’s not into something, it’s a no. But if your heart is pulling you towards something, it’s a yes. Regardless of what your mind is telling you to do.
With an ego authority, you have a tremendous amount of will, so it’s important to check in to make sure this opportunity, this person, etc. is something you really want before you commit your willpower. It’s also important to feel like there’s reciprocity in whatever situation you’re entering.
Be selfish
The ego authority is the most direct authority in Human Design in that you are simply designed to do what you want. When following your ego authority correctly, your choices in life may appear “selfish” to others. But you must prioritize yourself and make decisions that serve you first.
Sometimes these decisions will also serve the greater good, sometimes they won’t. But that shouldn’t be the basis for your decision-making.
If you’re a Manifestor with an ego authority, don’t get derailed by others’ wants or protests. You’re not here to be a people-pleaser. You are here to follow your urges without asking anyone for permission. Just do what you want—while also informing those around you of what you’re doing.
If you’re a Projector with an ego authority (this is quite rare), be sure that you’re only entering exchanges that you’ve been invited into first before you share your powerful guidance. Though you are meant to be “selfish” in your decisions, you are not meant to initiate action. Wait for others to ask for your advice or to partner with them or to offer you that job, then assess whether your heart wants to engage or walk away.
Tap into your willpower
37% of the population has a defined ego/heart center. It’s the center for ego wants—housing the desire for power, money, prestige, and material things—and also the center of motivation and willpower.
People with a defined ego center are highly motivated. And yes, it’s correct for them to be motivated by the “ego wants” detailed above. People with undefined egos (the majority of the population) don’t wake up motivated every day or have the willpower that people with defined egos do.
With an ego authority, it’s important to check in with yourself to make sure you have the willpower to complete or follow through with whatever you’re committing to. It’s important for anyone with a defined ego, authority or not, to keep their promises.
Questions to ask yourself
When faced with an opportunity or decision, it can be helpful to ask yourself the following questions:
Do I want to do this?
What’s my desire? What do I want?
What’s in it for me?
Do I have the willpower to make this happen?
Lastly, with an ego authority be sure to balance work with plenty of rest. You aren’t here to work, work, work and play is important. While you have the ironclad will to see anything through, make sure you’re not holding others to the same standard. And you’re not here to do it all yourself.
